SAN ANTONIO — Minnesota's Karl-Anthony Towns and the Timberwolves are battling against the Mavericks in the 2024 West Finals, and he might be trying to channel that winning spirit from a San Antonio Spurs icon.
During Game 4 of the series against Dallas, Towns wore the Nike GT Jump 2 sneakers, which might look familiar to Spurs fans.
The shoes are inspired by Duncan's original metallic silver Nike Total Air Foamposite Max, which he wore during his playing days.
Towns' version captures the essence of Duncan's 1998 version but tames the metallic colorway and keeps the metallic Nike logo on the sneaker's bubble.
Nike made Duncan the face of the Total Air Foamposite Max in 1998. His original sneakers returned in 2020, and fans can still buy them on the secondary market.
However, they are expensive, with some reaching $3000.
The Duncan-inspired kicks may have worked out for Towns and are a good luck charm.
Minnesota won Game 4 and forced a Game 5 back on their home court to avoid getting swept. Towns scored 25 points and made vital three-point shots late in the game to lift the Wolves to the 105-100 win.
