Oddsmaker projects Spurs' Victor Wembanyama will be the 2024-25 NBA Defensive Player of the Year, and it's not even close

Could Wemby see the first of many Defensive Player of the Year Awards starting next season?

SAN ANTONIO — Las Vegas oddsmakers are busy with 2024-25 NBA Draft prop futures and projecting which player will win the next Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) award.

According to oddsmaker BetOnline, San Antonio Spurs' Victor Wembanyama is projected to be crowned the new DPOY next season, and it is not even close.

BetOnline has Wemby with a staggering -275 odds that he'll hold up the award next season.

To round out the top three are Wolves' Rudy Gobert with +800 odds and Heat's Bam Adebayo with +1200.

This should not come as a big surprise that Wemby will be the league's best defender next season.

The 2023-24 DPOY runner-up was named to the All-NBA First Defensive Team last season and led the league in shots blocked at 3.5 per game. As if that wasn't enough, he had an NBA-best 20 games with multiple blocks, including a 10-block night against Toronto on Feb. 12.

He did everything on the defensive side in just his rookie season.

Projecting those numbers heading into season two, and it is pretty possible Wemby could top those defensive numbers as he's filled out his frame, coming into the new season with NBA experience and perhaps a chip on his shoulder that he should have been named last season's DPOY.

It also may be the start of a DPOY Award-winning streak the NBA has never seen before.
