Raptors 123, Spurs 116: What the teams said after the game

Spurs saw their two-game winning streak snapped against the Raptors.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs lost in overtime to the Toronto Raptors 123-116 Sunday afternoon at the Frost Center. San Antonio held a 22-point lead over the Raptors but poor defense and hot shooting from Toronto led to the Spurs' loss.

Victor Wembanyama had 20 points, and nine rebounds while Keldon Johnson finished with 26 points to lead the team. Zach Collins had 21 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. Malaki Branham had 16 points filling in as a starter with Devin Vassell out with a groin injury.

The Spurs are 3-3 on the season, and will next visit the Indiana Pacers Monday night on the road for their second game of a back-to-back.

Here's a sample of what the teams said after the game via the Spurs.

SPURS

Gregg Popovich

"We didn't have as much down the stretch scoring wise. We had a little bit more trouble with their (Raptors) length, their aggressiveness, their ability to get in passing lanes. It slowed us down to the point where our offense wasn't as smooth. They were able to come back for those two reasons. They did a good job.”

Wembanyama

“[Coach Popovich] often says it's important to play for the whole 48 minutes and even relaxing a couple of seconds is too much.”

Branham

“We didn't play as good tonight, but the great thing about the NBA [is] we've got another game tomorrow. So just forgetting about this game, moving on to the next and just doing the things that we can do better on the defensive end, offensive end and just playing a whole perfect game for 48 minutes.”

Collins

“Third quarter, second half as a whole, but really that third quarter. They came out and cut the lead down, got it down to single digits. And even then, we still hung in there, we still held the lead. And then in that fourth quarter, they just hit three after three after three."

RAPTORS

Coach Darko Rajakovic

“For me, transition is very, very important. Being able to get shots earlier in the shot clock, and after that providing the best available shot that we can get. And to be honest with you, I thought that the last couple of games delivered a couple of situations that we could do a better job of taking shots a little bit earlier in the shot clock."

Scottie Barnes

"I knew we needed something, so I just shot it and I looked over and saw it was a tie game and said ‘wow, okay, let's go.’ Just staying confident, staying in the gym, being ready to shoot those shots and stepping into it. You just got to have that confidence."
