The exodus of San Antonio Spurs assistants has begun.
Spurs assistant James Borrego is finalizing a deal to become the next head coach of the Charlotte Hornets, according to a report from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Borrego has a long history with the Spurs as he started working with the team as video coordinator way back in 2003 and was an assistant coach for the 2005 and 2007 championship runs. He’s also worked under NBA head coaches associated with the Spurs like Monty Williams and Jacque Vaughn.
He served as interim head coach of the Orlando Magic for part of 2015 after Vaughn was fired. Later that year, he returned to the Spurs under Gregg Popovich.
Borrego has been considered for several open NBA head coaching positions, as have several other Spurs assistants like Becky Hammon, Ettore Messina, and Ime Udoka.
