Rumor mill: Spurs expressed interest in UConn's Clingan; possible signal the No. 4 pick is available

The rumors are heating up with the NBA Draft just days away.

SAN ANTONIO — According to Draft Express, the San Antonio Spurs have expressed interest in selecting UConn's big man Donovan Clingan and have interviewed him ahead of Wednesday night's draft.

"San Antonio has expressed increasing interest in Clingan as of late, even going as far as interviewing him in recent days to get to know him better," the report states.

Additionally, Draft Express reports that this could be a move by the Spurs to put other teams on notice that if Clingan is on their radar, they'll need to get the No. 4 spot and not San Antonio looking to pair Clingan with Victor Wembanyama.

"Some think this might be a case of the Spurs signaling to rivals that the No. 4 pick is where they need to get to if they want to draft Clingan, as opposed to real interest in a fascinating twin-towers lineup with the 7-foot-3 UConn champion and 7-foot-5 Victor Wembanyama."

If true, this could be a move for the Spurs to gain more assets in future picks or move down or out of the draft.

For example, San Antonio could parlay the No. 4 pick into a proven, established veteran player if a team wants to move into the spot to select Clingnan, with the Spurs trading it or selecting the player for another team.
