Rumor Mill: Spurs possibly exploring packaging first-round picks for Hawks' No. 1 overall pick

Should the Spurs make a package deal with Atlanta for the No. 1 pick?

SAN ANTONIO — The 2024 NBA Draft is just a few weeks away, and the San Antonio Spurs are holding spots No. 4 and 8.

The team is in its rebuilding phase, and it can do plenty with those pair of first-round picks. The team can pick when it is on the clock, trade out of the draft, or trade up.

But if they use their picks to trade up, would they shoot for the Hawks' No. 1 pick overall?

According to ESPN's Jonothan Givony, that is an option the team is exploring.

During an interview with NBA on ESPN, Givony stated there are rumblings San Antonio is possibly exploring trading up to the No. 1 spot in exchange for their two first-round picks.

"You hear teams like San Antonio possibly exploring the idea of packaging the fourth and eighth pick. Maybe to move up to No. 1," he said.

If the Spurs are looking to move up to the top spot, it could be to expedite the team's rebuild around Victor Wembanyama.

A move for the No. 1 pick could be used to pair Wembanyama with a projected No. 1 pick, fellow countryman French forward Zaccharie Risacher. Or it could be a sign the team may want another French big man, Alex Sarr.

A move like that could signal the team is trying to expedite the rebuild.

Whatever course the Spurs will take come NBA Draft night, you can expect the rebuild road to be done with measured steps.

Recently, forward Jeremy Sochan discussed the rebuild and said the team is discussing it and exercising patience.

"We always talk about it [rebuilding] in the organization. From coaches to players to the front office, it's all about staying level-headed," Sochan said.  We're not trying to rush it. We're staying patient."
