SAN ANTONIO — According to a report from the Denver Post, the San Antonio Spurs are among several teams reportedly eyeing Nuggets' Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who declined his $15.4 million player option, making him an unrestricted free agent.
"The Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic are expected to pursue Caldwell-Pope using the ample cap space at their disposal, league sources told The Denver Post. Those are compelling destinations, considering both teams made the 2024 playoffs and are trying to take the next step. Other potential suitors that have been reported include Indiana, Chicago, Oklahoma City, and San Antonio."
The Spurs can use more veteran presence on the roster and bring a championship mindset to the young players. The 31-year-old is a 3-and-D player and can help defensively on the perimeter and be a reliable three-point threat for San Antonio.
The Nuggets own his Bird rights, allowing them to match other offers for his services. Denver General Manager Calvin Booth also stated the team will try to retain him.
“I think we have to look at everything, and the nature of free agency is, he’s unrestricted,” Booth said via The Denver Post. “So we can try to bring him back, and if he doesn’t want to come back or opts to go somewhere else, that’s his prerogative. So we’ll have to work with that. But I think we’re prepared to plug and play, so to speak.”
Last season, Caldwell-Pope started all 76 of his regular-season appearances and averaged 10.1 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists. He also connected on 41% of his three-point shots. He helped Denver reach the 2024 West Finals and capture the 2022-23 NBA title.
