Spurs 115, Suns 114: What they said after the game

"I was really proud of them," said coach Gregg Popovich.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs picked up their first road win of the 2022-23 season against the Phoenix Suns in a thrilling comeback win, 123-83.

Victor Wembanyama had 18 points, and eight rebounds while Devin Vassell finished with 18 points. Keldon Johnson finished with 27 points off 10-of-20 shooting to lead the team while Zach Collins had 14 points and five rebounds in the win. Tre Jones had 10 points on the night.

The Spurs are 2-2 on the season, and will next visit the Phoenix Suns Thursday night to wrap up their 3-game road trip.

Here's a sample of what the teams said after the game via the Suns.

SPURS

Gregg Popovich

"It's one game. They responded great after a 30-point loss. I couldn't be prouder of them. As we all talk about pounding the rock. They just kept playing through it no matter what. We made a gazillion mistakes. We just kept playing. That's the best thing about the group. I was really proud of them."

Vassell

"A big-time win. We're young. I think down the stretch we took some okay shots but big-time follow-up by Vic [Wembanyama]. He stayed poised. He had a big-time midrange [shot] and followed that with a putback. That's big time. Then KJ [Johnson] came out with that steal and really sealed the game. It's big time. It kind of just shows how we fought through the game. It wasn't pretty. We were down 20 points at some point."

Wembanyama

“The goal is to be good in all four quarters. Like I say, it is better to be bad in the first and finish strong than the opposite.”

Johnson

"We keep going, keep fighting, we stay together regardless of what’s going on. We went down 20 and found a way to come back and make some plays toward the end. We got the win. Not really, in L.A., I mean, it happens. Everybody loses games, everybody gets blown out. We took that and learned from it."

SUNS

Frank Vogel

“It’s disappointing. You lose a game after playing a brilliant basketball game, I mean the offensive sharing and trust was really good throughout, our defensive disposition was really good throughout, but then our foot fell off the gas a little bit in the third quarter. They made seven threes, but it’s an early season lesson for us."

Kevin Durant

"We made shots and we got shots up. But that third quarter and the second half, they made shots as well and came back to close the gap. They made timely plays.”
