Spurs 132, Suns 121: What they said after the game

“It all started on the defensive side," said Victor Wembanyama on a win over Phoenix.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs dominated the Phoenix Suns in their second-straight meeting Wednesday night, 132-121, in Phoenix.

Victor Wembanyama had his best game as a pro with 38 points, and 10 rebounds while Devin Vassell finished with 17 points before exiting the game at halftime with a groin injury. Keldon Johnson finished with seven points while Zach Collins had 19 points and eight rebounds in the win. Tre Jones had 12 points and 10 assists.

The Spurs are 3-2 on the season, and will next host the Toronto Raptors Sunday afternoon at the Frost Bank Center.

Here's a sample of what the teams said after the game via the Suns.

SPURS

Gregg Popovich

“You know as well as everybody that when you go through those experiences, trials and tribulations, you learn from it. And until you go through it, since you can’t practice it, you do it all you want but you got to be in it when the lights are on, screw it up, finally get it right. The best part of the game tonight was when we shot it up really well and that happens in NBA games. We get a lead."

Wembanyama

“It all started on the defensive side. The energy we brought in. It was pretty much all that we talked about. They have so many good defensive players. That was the spot that we needed to focus on, and it worked. Especially in the first half. We took a big lead.”

Jeremy Sochan

"The most important thing: communication. Just wanting it and that’s the energy we’re coming with. It’s 48 minutes; there’s going to be ups and downs and we’re playing against two really good players and a really good team so they’re going to come back from whatever the score was. At least we stayed composed and got the win at the end.”

SUNS

Frank Vogel

"We had some breakdown shooters on the backside, but general closeouts, guys are pulling threes on their own hand and give them credit. They shot the heck out of the basketball, especially in the first half."

Kevin Durant

“I think he (Wembanyama) got at least 18 points off fast break layups, then we were switching and he was being big in the paint over the top of guys catching lobs; they played a great team game."
