Spurs' Charles Bassey out for the remainder of the season after suffering torn ACL

Bassey suffered the injury in a game with the Austin Spurs. It's the same knee that ended his last season with a fractured patellar tendon.

SAN ANTONIO — Spurs center Charles Bassey will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his left ACL, the team announced on Tuesday.

It's the same knee that ended his last season with a fractured patellar tendon. The injury happened during a Dec. 10 game with Austin Spurs versus the Texas Legends while he was on assignment with the team's G League affiliate. He put up 30 points, 13 rebounds and 4 blocks in the game.

Bassey, who attended San Antonio's St. Anthony High School, was averaging 3.3 points per game with 4.0 rebounds and 72.5% field goal shooting in 19 games for the Spurs. Bassey has been working to carve out a role for himself in San Antonio's rotation, and the explosive leaper impacted games by cleaning the glass and blocking shots.

On Fed. 2023, the Spurs signed him to a reported four-year, $10.2 million deal with a guarantee of $5.2 million.

Not only was he making an impact on the court but off the court, he was helping out San Antonio during the holiday season.

"It means a lot because just helping the community out here, this is where I went in high school. It's been great just hanging out with the families from here," Bassey said. "Just hanging out with the families and the culture in San Antonio, it's just great. I love it."
