The San Antonio Spurs have reportedly agreed to a contract buyout with embattled forward DeMarre Carroll.
According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Carroll could sign with the Houston Rockets once he clears waivers.
The small forward was half a season into a 3-year, $21 million contract.
Carroll was traded to the Spurs by the Brooklyn Nets in July as part of a three-team trade that sent Davis Bertans to the Washington Wizards. The veteran wingman was brought to San Antonio with the expectation of being a role player, notably providing a defensive presence to a unit that had finished the previous season as one of the NBA's worst defenses.
During the preseason, Carroll was asked if he knew of the "Spurs Way":
"Every team around the league kind of models their organization, some way, off the Spurs," Carroll said. "At the end of the way, high expectations, high-character guys, discipline and coming down and playing hard.
"If you step in here and you don't do those things, you stick out like a sore thumb. As soon as you step in the door, Coach Pop let you know that you need to do the right thing."
Carroll could never find a footing in the Spurs' rotation, averaging just 9 minutes in the 15 games he suited up for the Silver and Black. He averaged just 2.2 points on the season.
Throughout his tenure with the Spurs, Carroll took to Twitter to express his positivity and his motivation to find the court. When it seemed like the situation with San Antonio had reached an impasse, the tone of Carroll's tweets changed to frustration and confusion.
As the team progressed towards a buyout agreement with Carroll, he tweeted, "I can see the LIGHT..."
Carroll, 6-foot-8 and 215 pounds, averaged 11.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 25.4 minutes in 67 games last season. He played two seasons with Brooklyn.
Selected by Memphis with the 27th pick in the first round of the 2009 NBA draft, Carroll played with the Grizzlies until getting traded to Houston in February 2011. One of Carroll's teammates in Memphis was Rudy Gay, who is starting his third season with the Spurs.
Carroll also has played for the Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz, Atlanta Hawks and Toronto Raptors. He and Spurs guard DeMar DeRozan played together in Toronto for two seasons (2015-16, 2016-17). Toronto traded Carroll to Brooklyn in July 2017.
