Spurs' Devin Vassell to miss start of 2024-25 season

Vassell is expected to be out until Nov. 1 due to foot surgery from last season.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs have announced that Devin Vassell will miss the start of the 2024-25 season due to surgery for a stress reaction on his right foot (third metatarsal head) last season.

The team reports that he participates in non-contact drills, and his status will be updated on Nov. 1.

Vassell played 68 games last season before suffering the injury on March 31. He averaged 19.5 points per game (a career-high), including 3.8 rebounds and 4.1 assists.

In February of last season, he averaged a season-high 22.5 points per game through 12 games. In March, he recorded 20.2 points per game in 13 games played.

In his last three outings, he has averaged 26.7 points per game and 52% field goal shooting in the fourth period this season, his highest shooting average in any period played.

"He’s been putting them up all year," Gregg Popovich said last season. "He's been unbelievably aggressive and confident the entire year."

With Victor Wembanayma as the team's primary offensive focus, Vassell has emerged as the team's secondary go-to scorer.

He has 36 20-plus scoring nights this season and is one of five Spurs in history with multiple outings of 5-plus three-pointers in his first 100 career games.

COLLINS AND BASSEY READY TO GO

The Spurs also announced that Zach Collins and Charles Bassey are cleared to play in the new season's opener against Dallas.

Collins dislocated his shoulder in the team's season finale versus Detroit and underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum. He played 69 games and averaged 11.2 points per game, including 5.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists.

Bassey suffered a knee injury (left ACL tear) with the Austin Spurs on Dec. 10 versus the Legends. He missed the final 63 games for the Spurs. He averaged 3.3 points per game with 4.0 rebounds and 72.5% field-goal shooting in 19 games for the Spurs.
