'Humbled and blessed': Spurs hired new play-by-play announcer to succeed Bill Land

Tobey has done TV play-by-play with the Austin Spurs before joining San Antonio.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs have announced Jacob Tobey as their new TV play-by-play announcer in the wake of longtime broadcaster Bill Land's retirement, fulfilling what he called a "childhood dream."

Tobey will join Sean Elliott in the broadcast booth for Spurs games. He's set to make his debut when the preseason tips off Monday against Oklahoma City.

“We're thrilled to welcome Jacob to the Spurs family," said Mike Kickirillo, Spurs senior director of broadcast, in a release. “His passion for the game, combined with his broadcast experience and holistic sports knowledge, make him a perfect fit for our team. We're confident that Spurs fans will quickly embrace Jacob's energy and insightful commentary.”

Tobey has been working as a weekend sports anchor at 9NEWS in Denver since 2020. In addition to his work for 9NEWS, he's also been a play-by-play announcer for various networks, including Fox Sports and the PAC-12 Network.

Tobey is not a stranger to the Spurs family, having also been the play-by-play voice of the Austin Spurs.

Tobey also has a musical side, having performed as a singer and guitarist while in Denver. He passionately advocates for his Native American heritage, representing the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe.

Tobey took to X to share his gratitude at being hired, saying he was "excited, humbled and blessed" to join the Spurs.
