SAN ANTONIO — On Saturday night at the Frost Bank Center, the San Antonio Spurs pulled off a thrilling win over one of the best teams in the West against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
San Antonio trailed as many as 15 points in the first half and faced a 10-point deficit heading into the final frame.
But a critical 13-2 run in the fourth sparked a tremendous comeback win, and the Frost crowd was as loud as ever.
And much like Dragon Ball Z's Goku summoning the good energy from the globe to defeat his enemies, that was just the extra spark the team needed.
"I was definitely big. We got the best fan base in the world. Whenever we need them, they never fail. They are always there for us to pick us up and give us the extra boost," Keldon Johnson said. "That extra boost to get over get over the hump."
Despite the poor season record-wise, the Silver and Black fans still pack the Frost Center nightly.
The Spurs average 18,288 home attendance with fans raising decibel levels to the maximum.
In the team's win over the Wolves, each fan was up and off their seats, rallying the team to the win during the critical final period.
"We appreciate them, and we go out there and put on the best show possible for fans," Johnson said.
Aside from the cheers, the fans are the team's lifeblood when games get tight.
It fuels the players to wins and gives the fans a reason to smile when the final buzzer sounds off.
"It's huge, and we're feeding off them," said Devin Vassell, who scored a team-high 25 points in the win.
To add to the excitement, several Spurs connected on thrilling dunks that got the fans louder with each one.
From Victor Wembanyama and Johnson, their dunks fueled fans in attendance to roar. Vassell also got in the act, and he could have had the best dunk of the night but missed posterizing a Wolves player.
"Vic is a dunk, they're going crazy. KJ gets a dunk and they're going crazy," he said.
Vassell added: "I tried. I'm so mad about that dunk attempt, but I tried to compliment and they were going crazy."
The Spurs will continue their long homestand against the Wizards Monday night.
The team will be looking for its first three-game win streak of the season, and a packed Frost arena would be helpful.
"That's what we need. As a young group, having the fans engaged and having the support like that is huge for us," Vassell said.
