SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs will play at least eight games in July, so the team’s young players will get plenty of experience.
The Silver & Black will participate in the Salt Lake City Summer League again in 2019, according to an announcement Monday. The Spurs, Memphis Grizzlies, Cleveland Cavaliers and host Utah Jazz will play a round-robin showcase from July 1 to July 3. Each team will play three games as part of daily doubleheaders on Monday-Wednesday at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. (CT). Fans can find more information online at www.slcsummerleague.com.
The Salt Lake City Summer League will showcase rookies selected in the 2019 NBA Draft competing in their first NBA games, sophomores, select free agents and athletes competing to make NBA and G League regular season rosters.
Players selected in the draft will be facing a pretty quick turnaround. The 2019 NBA Draft will be held Thursday, June 20, and the SLC Summer League will be done two weeks later.
The Spurs will take some of the same players into the main annual NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, which begins later that week. MGM Resorts NBA Summer League 2019 runs from July 5 to July 15 and will include all 30 NBA teams, as well as the Chinese and Croatian National Teams. Every team will play at least five games and as many as seven in Las Vegas, the NBA said.
Derrick White, Lonnie Walker IV and Chimezie Metu all played for the Spurs in summer 2018 before joining the main roster for the 2018-19 season. The Silver & Black posted a 1-4 record in Las Vegas last summer.
