Spurs' Wembanyama nominated for 'Best Breakthrough Athlete' ESPY Award

ESPN has announced its 2024 ESPY Award nominees, and Wembanyama is among them.

SAN ANTONIO — ESPN has announced its 2024 "Best Breakthrough Athlete" ESPY Award nominees, and San Antonio Spurs' Victor Wembanyama is among them.

This marks Wemby's first nomination, and he joins other first-time nominees, Haleigh Bryant, Coco Gauff, C.J. Stroud, and Juju Watkins, for the award.

Wemby's rookie season was eye-opening.

In the 2023-24 regular season, Wembanyama led all rookies in points (21.4), rebounds (10.6) and blocks (3.6) per game, in addition to ranking fourth in assists (3.9) and second in steals (1.2) per game.

He is also the first player to have at least 1,500 points, 700 rebounds, 250 assists, 250 blocks, and 100 3-pointers made in a season.

He was also the runner-up for the 2024 NBA Defensive Player of the Year and named to the All-NBA First Defensive Team.

Spurs fans can help Wemby secure the award by voting for him now.

Last season, the Spurs took home the ESPN Award for Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year Award for their work in helping the city of Uvalde, Texas, recover from the tragic mass school shooting.
