Spurs' Victor Wembanyama ramping up offseason workouts

Wemby is not slowing down his drive to be the best.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Spurs' Victor Wembanyama is on his first NBA offseason, but that does not mean the work is stopping for the 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year.

Wemby is doubling his offseason workouts, doing two a day, and is not satisfied on the court despite being named the NBA's best rookie.

"Everyone is impressed by Victor Wembanyama's level of focus, his determination," The Athletic's Shams Charania said. "He's just not satisfied. He took a short time off after the season ended. He's already begun two a day work outs, he's been at it for weeks now, he's been fully immersed in their offseason so far in their workouts in San Antonio."

This is excellent news, knowing the team's centerpiece is looking to become a more dominant force in year two.

In his rookie season, he led the league with 3.5 blocks per game, grabbed 10.5 rebounds, and averaged 1.3 steals. He was the only player in the last 15 years to average at least three blocks and one steal per game.

He also posted 2.9 deflections per game, 21.4 points, and 3.9 assists.

He has a lot on his offseason plate, including playing for Team France at the 2024 Olympics and a short turnaround to the start of the team's training camp.

Hopefully, there will be a few weeks for him to decompress before the start of his sophomore season.

POINT GUARD NEED

Charania also stated the team will be taking a "prudent" approach to adding a point guard this offseason if that is the direction the team is going.

"They're going to be prudent at that point guard spot. The whole league knows that's the position the Spurs will identify into this offseason," he said.

Point guard need is likely high atop the Spurs to-do list this offseason.

There are viable point guards to draft in 2024 (the Spurs own the No. 4 and 8 picks), but the team's enormous flexibility to make a roster move (draft capital, salary cap, players on the current roster) allows it to address the need quickly.

However, veteran guard Tre Jones established himself as a viable floor general to lead the team next season and believes the current roster can turn things around next season.

"We're starting to get on the same page with rotations on the defensive end and playing off of [Victor Wembanyama] being able to get to almost every shot inside the three-point line and being able to rotate off of that," Jones said. "And then offensively playing off of each other but off of [Devin Vassell] and [Victor Wembanyama] a lot."
