SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama took the NBA by storm, and fans have been watching him throughout the regular season.
Whether it was his shooting touch from the three-point line or his dunk, "Wemby mania" was everywhere and impacted NBA social and digital media.
The league announced the top five most-viewed plays and the top 10 most-viewed players on NBA social and digital media platforms this season, and Wembanyama's name appeared on the lists.
Wembanyama's dunk against the Boston Celtics on Dec. 31 earned 247 million views and landed at the No. 2 spot on the list of the top five most-viewed plays.
During that moment, ex-Spur Derrick White was near him and did all he could to avoid getting dunked on.
"I’m not an idiot,” White said. “I was hoping he would take another dribble, and then I could try to do that, but he picked it up, and I never saw it again. So, I was just trying to get out of the way. That was crazy.”
Wembanyma also landed on the top 10 most-viewed players at No. 3. with 1.3 billion views. He ranked behind LeBron James (No. 1) and Stephen Curry (No. 2).
The Spurs center had an incredible rookie season, and things are looking up as his NBA career progresses.
He set team and league records, won three straight NBA Rookie of the Month Awards to close the season, will likely be named the Rookie of the Year, and will be the face of the league in no time.
