SAN ANTONIO — It was another historic night for the San Antonio Spurs rookie center Victor Wembanyama versus the Pistons.
On Wednesday night, he recorded his first NBA triple-double with 16 points, 10 assists, and 12 rebounds in just 21 minutes in a win versus Detroit.
It is the second-fastest triple-double in NBA history and he is the youngest player in NBA history to record a triple-double with 0 turnovers since turnovers were first tracked in 1977-78.
The accomplishment is certainly one of his best moments in his rookie season and he made sure that the game ball fell into his hands following the game.
Wemby shared a photo on social media as proof he has the historic game ball.
Interestingly, the rookie center did not know his triple-double made history once he recorded it. He focused more on the team win but the history he made also impacted him.
"I didn't know it was the second-fastest," he said postgame against the Pistons. "It matters to me."
Wembanyama added: "This is the kind of statement I want to make as a player also."
Throughout the game, Pistons' Jalen Duren had the task of defending Wemby. After the game, he was impressed with the rookie and heaped praise.
"He’s tall and skilled and he’s constantly moving. The way he moves on the court, he never stays still," he said. "That’s probably the hardest thing. Once you get close to the rim, he’s looking at the rim."
To add more to the historic value of the triple-double, his 10 assists were a career-high and it is the youngest triple-double in Spurs' history (20 years, six days old).
