Incredibly rare Tim Duncan basketball rookie card featured as part of Sotheby's 'Holy Grails' auction

A rare Duncan rookie card will be featured at the inaugural "Holy Grails" Sotheby's auction this September.

SAN ANTONIO — Get ready to shell out a lot of your money if you want to participate in this upcoming Sotheby's auction and get one of the rarest Tim Duncan basketball cards.

The auction house recently announced that Sotheby's and Fanatics will host the inaugural "Holy Grails" auction this September.

The auction will include many valuable sports cards, including over 40 of the rarest and most coveted trading cards from the 20th and 21st centuries.

And the San Antonio Spurs legend's 1997-98 Precious Metal Gems emerald basketball rookie card No. 66 with a grade of eight is among them. It is also No. 10 out of 100 cards in circulation.

This Duncan card is a prized treasure among card collectors who have been searching for it for years. Sotheby's estimates it will sell at auction for between $200,000 and $300,000.

"The 'Holy Grails' auction concept pays tribute to the collector community’s profound admiration for these rare and elusive treasures. Collectors often spend years in pursuit of these prized items," Sotheby's announced. "Now, in response, Sotheby’s and Fanatics are bringing together the most exceptional and sought-after pieces – the ultimate "Holy Grails" of the collecting world. "

In April 2021, the same card sold for a whopping $223,860 at a Goldin auction. This marked the all-time price record for any Duncan card.

Basketball cards are a hot commodity right now, as fans are scooping them up by the boxes, hoping to land that one player's card that will be worth a lot of money.

Spurs' Victor Wembanyama's cards are currently selling for top dollar and coveted among collectors.

For example, a well-known card collector has put a $1 million bounty on an upcoming Wemby card.

Also, a one-of-one Wemby card is at auction currently, with a starting bid set at over $31,000.

The "Holy Grails" Sotheby's auction includes cards from Tom Brady, LeBron James, Jackie Robinson, Roberto Clemente, and many more.
