SAN ANTONIO — Get ready to dig deep into your pockets if you want the latest San Antonio Spurs' Victor Wembanyama basketball cards from Topps.
Topps has been teasing something new set to hit card hobby stores with videos of a meteor crashing down on San Antonio.
Well, now we know what they were about—a new box set of Wembanyama cards at $8,000 per box!
Yes, you read that right. It will cost $8,000.
Sports Card Investor says Topps will release the high-end "Topps Mercury: Victor Wembanyama" box set on Oct. 9.
Each box will feature eight cards, including Wemby game-worn relic cards, on-card dual autographs and unique inscriptions.
Base cards will highlight Wemby’s top rookie moments and other card variants.
Wemby cards are in high demand, with some rare cards going for incredible amounts of money at auction.
Recently, Wemby visited San Antonio's Boomtown Sports Cards and Collectibles on Bandera Road to celebrate “Topps Hobby Rip Night.”
"I’m starting to have a little collection," Wembanyama said to fans in attendance. "I’ve got cards of myself, of course."
Wembanyama’s visit was part of a global Topps sports card event. It was a part of Topps Hobby Rip Night for sports trading card and memorabilia hobbyists who descended upon 560-plus hobby shops across the globe.
"It's completely surreal to have him in the shop," Boomtown owner Victor Nava said of Wembanyama's visit. "We come here every day. We don't see someone like that in the shop, and to see him physically here. It was mind-blowing. It was life-changing."
The pricey Wemby card box set will be available on Topps.com and at select hobby shops such as Boomtown Sports Cards and Collectible.
