FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys will be without another one of their top receiving threats at least this weekend against the the Pittsburgh Steelers, perhaps longer.
Head coach Mike McCarthy told media on Wednesday that wide receiver Brandin Cooks was out due to a "knee issue." Cooks is expected to recover and return to field to with the Cowboys in one to three weeks, a source told WFAA Cowboys insider Ed Werder.
Cooks has endured minor issues with his right knee since training camp. In August, Cooks received an injection from a medical group in New York. In consultation with the team, he did a follow-up injection with the same doctors after the team’s victory against the Giants. The area became infected soon after he returned to Dallas a few days later.
Cowboys orthopedic surgeon Dr. Dan Cooper performed an arthroscopic procedure on Cooks in which antibiotics were administered to resolve the infection.
In Wednesday's media availability, McCarthy would not comment further on Cooks' situation other than the fact that he's unavailable for Sunday night's game versus the Steelers.
Cooks' status for the following week against the Lions before the bye week will be determined by his recovery from the arthroscopic procedure required when his knee developed the infection.
Through four games, Cooks, 31, has caught only nine passes for 91 yards and one touchdown, which he scored in Week 1 versus the Cleveland Browns. Four of those nine catches also came against the Browns.
Without Cooks in the fold, star receiver CeeDee Lamb will work alongside Jalen Tolbert, Jalen Brooks, KaVontae Turpin and Ryan Flournoy in the wide receiver room.
Rumors have circulated about Dallas trying to pursue Las Vegas Raiders wideout Davante Adams, but the rumor mill seemed to be dispelled by local Cowboys beat writer Clarence Hill, of All-City's DLLS.
The Cowboys are hosting a watch party on Sunday night at AT&T Stadium. You can find all of those details here.
