DALLAS — Nobody wants the Dallas Cowboys to win the Super Bowl more badly than Jerry Jones.
A close second, though, might be the guy Jones believes has what it takes to bring Dallas its first Lombardi Trophy in nearly 30 years. Dak Prescott inked the biggest deal in NFL history (per year), a four-year, $240 million extension to keep the blue-and-silver star on his helmet.
Many have criticized Jones for not getting the deal done sooner and thought Jones may not want to pay the fee Prescott would require, especially if he hit the open market. Speaking before the season opener against the Browns, Jones said his belief in Prescott had no bearing on the negotiations. Rather, it was about the cost to build around him that best suited the Cowboys to win that coveted Super Bowl, per Jones.from
"We’re going to be able to get players around him that give us a chance to compete for a Super Bowl. He was our best chance of getting one," Jones said.
Jones told the media "there’s a lot of me that thinks I hope Dak is our quarterback for the rest of my time."
Prescott has expressed a similar sentiment of wanting to be the Cowboys' signal caller for the entirety of his career. He wants to be the one who leads Dallas back to the promised land.
“That's what motivates me on being here, honestly, is to be the quarterback that that does it, that wins it. I don't think that winning it any other place, would be the same,” Prescott told the media this week.
So, the deal is done and he'll have at least another four seasons to try and accomplish that goal. And he's going to be paid very handsomely in the process.
Prescott told reporters after the Browns game he's excited the deal is done so he can stop being asked about it and move forward.
Dallas went on to defeat the Cleveland Browns in Week 1, 33-17.
