SAN ANTONIO — The Lone Star State representation will be strong in the City of Light when the 2024 Paris Olympics get underway Friday. Of the roughly 600 athletes competing for Team USA, more than 60 have Texas ties.
That means that if Team USA lives up to its formidable history of performance at the Summer Olympics – the U.S. boasts an overall count of 2,975 medals, according to CBS News, more than two and a half times as many as the runner-up, the Soviet Union – Texas athletes will likely be a major reason why.
Some of those athletes are giants in the world of American sports, including gymnast Simone Biles, WNBA player Brittney Griner and two-time Masters champion Scottie Scheffler. But dozens of other competitors are also hoping to grab the gold in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower in the 2024 Games—including a few with Alamo City ties.
Read on below for our guide on 2024 Olympics athletes who were born in Texas and/or now call it home.
Athletes from the San Antonio area
A Puerto Rican athlete who attended the University of the Incarnate Word, 25-year-old Figueroa is the son of a professional water polo player who will compete for Olympics glory on the artistic swimming team.
21-year-old Garcia, of Laredo, will be continuing his young career in international competition after participating in the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago.
Another Laredo native, Lozano has been competing as a boxer since she was 9. Her nickname is an apt one: “The Troublemaker.”
Sanderson, who grew up in San Antonio and graduated from Marshall High School, will be competing in his fourth Olympic Games as he hunts for his first career medal. The U.S. Army staff sergeant’s best finish in the 25 meter rapid fire pistol event was fifth, in 2008.
Born in San Antonio, Kerley, a silver medalist in the 2020 Games, will look to grow his career medal count when he participates in the 100 meter dash and 4 x 100 meter relay.
