SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio native and Southwest High School product Mario 'El Azteca' Barrios is a shooting star in the sport of boxing.

Barrios, who will soon turn 24 years old, beat Jose Juan Velasco via knockout in the second round.

Barrios is now a perfect 24-0 in his career and hopes to get a shot for a championship belt.

“I want that world champion. I want all the smoke. I’m ready. I’ve proven it my past eight fights at 140, I’m ready for that title shot," Barrios said.

The victory over Velasco should move Barrios a step closer to fighting WBA 140-pound champion Regis Prograis (24-0, 20 KOs) of Houston. Prograis is coming off a sixth-round TKO of Kiryl Relikh (23-3, 19 KOs) of Belarus on April 27 in Lafayette, La.

Barrios in ranked No. 1 by the WBA. In July, Prograis handed Velasco his only loss, an eighth-round TKO in New Orleans.
