SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio was not named as a finalist for Major League Soccer expansion, Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff's office announced Wednesday.
This comes after Wolff questioned San Antonio's future with MLS when it was revealed that Austin had previous arrangements to potentially accommodate a national franchise.
Wolff also said the county "would not have invested in Toyota Field" without having a clear path to MLS.
MLS attorney Bradley Ruskin wrote the following in a Nov. 17 letter to Judge Wolff:
“Based on discussions between MLS and the [Spurs Sports & Entertainment], consideration of the Spurs’ application is being deferred until the second phase of the expansion process with the agreement of the Spurs.”
Wolff had not been informed by neither SS&E nor MLS about the deferral of the application.
Wolff said he looks forward to a full report from the Bexar County District Attorney's Office.
