San Antonio Stars will retire Becky Hammon's jersey

Becky Hammon of the San Antonio Silver Stars lays up a shot against the Phoenix Mercury in Game One of the Western Conference Semifinals during the 2010 WNBA Playoffs at US Airways Center on August 26, 2010 in Phoenix, Arizona.

The San Antonio Silver Stars announced that they will retire Becky Hammon's jersey on June 25 at the AT&T Center when they host the Atlanta Dream.

Hammon will be the first player in Silver Stars history to have her number retired.

The now-assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs is the organization's all-time leader in assists, three-pointers made, and points per game.

Hammon was undrafted and undersized coming out of college but quickly built a name for herself after she was signed by the New York Liberty. After spending her first eight seasons in the WNBA in the Big Apple, she spent the last eight in the Alamo City.

In 2011, Hammon was named one of the Top 15 WNBA players of all time.

If you ever got to see Hammon live, she was well worth the price of admission. Hammon's flair for creating shots among taller opponents, using her handles and ability to score, elicits comparisons to Manu Ginobili.

It wasn't just the stats that she put up and her ability to will four different teams to the WNBA Finals, it was the way she did it in taking a leadership role and never giving up.

She didn't just do it in the WNBA either. As a member of Team Russia at the 2008 Olympics, she led the Russians to a bronze medal, equaling their best showing in Olympic history.

Since her basketball playing career ended, she's become a feminist icon, becoming the first woman to coach in the NBA under Gregg Popovich and the San Antonio Spurs.

She's still chasing that ever-elusive championship.
