SAN ANTONIO — When you tune in to watch the Super Bowl on KENS 5 Sunday, you might want to cheer for a San Antonio hometown hero.

Spencer Burford, 23, was born and raised right here in the Alamo City. He is listed as a right guard for the offense on the San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl depth chart, and is expected to start.

Burford played football at Wagner High School here in San Antonio, then went on to play for UTSA Roadrunners.

Burford played in 45 career games at UTSA (2018-2021) and drew 43 starts in his four-year career with the Roadrunners. He earned second-team all-league accolades as a junior and was an honorable mention all-conference selection in 2019.

He was UTSA's first-ever four-star signee and a San Antonio Wagner High product, as well as being a key member of an offensive line that helped open holes for UTSA career rushing leader Sincere McCormick, who registered back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons and finished with 3,929 rushing yards, 34 rushing touchdowns and 18 100-yard games.

He became the third player in UTSA program history to be selected in the NFL Draft when he was picked by the San Francisco 49ers with the 29th selection in the fourth round (No. 134 overall) in 2022. He has now been there for two seasons.

In the 2023 season, Burford started for the 49ers in 11 of the 12 games played.

Look for Spencer in the starting lineup for San Francisco on Sunday when the 49ers take on the Kansas City Chiefs.
