Spurs veteran roster players understand 'Wembymania', how the Spurs universe has changed

"It is incredible to watch," said forward Doug McDermott. "He does some things that you can't really explain."

SAN ANTONIO — Let's just put it this way, every game he is going to do something that will make you turn around and say huh?

And those aren't my words, those are the words of star guard Devin Vassell about rookie phenom Victor Wembanyama

And every player on the roster would agree with that.

"It is incredible to watch," said forward Doug McDermott. "He does some things that you can't really explain."

Wembymania is front and center and it's not leaving San Antonio any time soon we hope and assume.

The veteran roster players understand how their Spurs universe has changed and they are all good with it, at least they're prepared to be.

"I think we're gonna handle it pretty well," said second year forward Jeremy Sochan.

"I feel like the Spurs and their public relations team with Coach Pop know it is not all about Wemby."

Sochan was one of may players to reiterate that the focus of the season is on the team.

"I think that is the most important thing, and I think we'll answer all the questions in the positive way," he continued. "Hopefully no negative comments ever come out, but it is what it is and hopefully we will handle it well."

Keldon Johnson is one of the young core pieces the Spurs continue to build the future around, and he says any and all of the outside noise doesn't affect him, his teammates or Victor for that matter.

"He's been outgoing, humble, energetic, playful and great," he said. "All the things that come with him being an amazing basketball player we kinda just keep all that on the outside."

Center Zach Collins was quick to point out that all the hype is great, but if players don't go out and do their jobs individually then everything could fall apart and go the opposite day.

"At the end of the day we have to keep it about basketball and we will," he said. "This whole organization just does the best job of keeping everything great, and even though we have all the hype and the new facility we still have to go out there and play, and that is gonna decide really how this thing goes."

The Spurs open the new NBA regular season Wednesday night hosting the rival Dallas Mavericks. "Everybody is gonna have the best time this season watching him play," said Vassell. "It is gonna be fun."
