SAN ANTONIO — Nine weeks of Texas High School Football are in the books, and the playoff picture is starting to take shape. Here are my picks for the best San Antonio-area programs that make up the KENS 5 Top 5.
No. 5: Southwest Dragons (8-0) and John Jay Mustangs (8-0)
Southwest was ranked fifth last week. Jay wasn't ranked.
We’re tied! Say "Hello" to the Mustangs and "Welcome back" to the Dragons, both undefeated at this point in the season.
That won't last for long: They meet Friday night with the district championship on the line in the KENS 5 Game of the Week.
No. 4: Steele Knights (7-1)
Ranked third last week.
The Knights hung 63 on San Marcos, shutting out the Rattlers in the process Friday. Led by senior Quarterback Chad Warner's 25 touchdowns, the Knights are 7-1 and visit Canyon on Friday night. Steele can wrap up another district title with a win over the Cougars.
No. 3: Alamo Heights Mules (9-0)
Ranked fourth last week.
Coming in hot at No. 3 is Alamo Heights, with nine straight wins across nine straight weeks! They beat McCollum, 60-0, last week and wrap their regular season at Kerrville Tivy on Friday. The Mules are searching for regular-season perfection and the district championship in the same season.
No. 2: Pieper Warriors (8-0)
Ranked second last week.
The Warriors are 8-0 after handling MacArthur, 75-7. They are home with Victoria East on Friday night as they search for their ninth regular-season victory in nine opportunities.
No. 1: Brennan Bears (7-1)
Ranked first last week.
Returning to the top spot is Brennan, which won big over Stevens, 52-0, to improve to 7-1. A big reason for Brennan's success: Junior Running Back Micai Thompson, who has averaged 103.5 rushing yards per game to go with 13 total endzone trips. The Bears get the Taft Raiders on Halloween night.
That's my KENS 5 Top 5! What's yours? Be sure to like, share and comment ahead of Week 10.
