UTSA football misses out on AP Top 25 preseason slot, but receives handful of votes

Even though the Roadrunners didn't crack the Top 25 to start the season, it's promising to see that voters have an eye on them.

SAN ANTONIO — The preseason AP Top 25 College Football Poll has officially been released and even though the Roadrunners didn't crack the Top 25 teams, some voters made it known they're keeping their eyes on them.

The cream of the crop in college football remain at the top of the rankings, but Jeff Traylor and the UTSA football program have been making waves the past few seasons, catching the eyes of a handful of 2024 preseason poll voters as they enter their second season in the American Athletic Conference.

On Monday, the Associated Press released the first college football rankings ahead of the new season. Voters opted for George, Ohio State and Oregon in the top three spots, with Iowa just sneaking in at No. 25.

But a handful of other teams received nods, just not enough to crack the preseason list. Among them: Louisville, Virginia Tech, Boise State and UTSA, which garnered a total of six Top-25 votes.

It might not seem like a lot, but this is just one sign that the program continues to be on an upward trajectory after hopping from Conference USA to the AAC.

In the AAC preseason poll, UTSA was picked to finish second, collecting four first-place votes to Memphis' 23. The Roadrunners missed out on a shot at a third straight conference title last year when they lost to then-No. 18 Tulane, which ranked third in the conference preseason poll.
