Grocery store in Canyon Lake installs machine that sells ammunition

Lowe's Market is the first business in Texas to have an American Rounds' smart retail automated ammo dispenser.

CANYON LAKE, Texas — AI has made its way to selling ammunition with the smart retail automated ammo dispensers provided by American Rounds.

The technology is similar to a vending machine but a lot more complicated. People walk up to the dispenser, choose the ammunition they want, submit their ID and then AI reads their face to ensure it matches. You have to be 21 or older to purchase the ammunition.

A Lowe's Market in Canyon Lake is the first to have a machine by American Rounds in Texas.

“We kind of looked at the market and said how can we use this technology to create a better environment but still maintain the integrity of the second amendment," the CEO of American Rounds, Grant Magers said.

Magers said they started putting dispensers in stores around Alabama and Oklahoma in 2023. Since then, the demand for their technology has gone up.

"Over 200 are waiting," Magers said.

Magers said they expect to have their tech installed in stores from Hawaii to Colorado. Another dispenser will make its way to another Lowe's Market in Canyon Lake soon.

The goal of the technology is to keep minors from accessing ammunition. Magers said he hopes it goes far and allows people to have more access to the ammunition they need.
