A Canyon Lake Library is helping people grow their minds and their gardens with a seed library

The Tye Preston Memorial Library created a seed library in June with the help of the Native Plant Society of Texas.

CANYON LAKE, Texas — Book worms and plant lovers can develop their minds with words while growing gardens at the Tye Preston Memorial Library in Canyon Lake.

Members of the library partnered with the Native Plant Society of Texas to install a seed library among all the literature in June. Sine then 150 people have borrowed seed packets.

The goal of the seed library is to spread wildflowers across the region while providing pollinators a source of food.

"This is a pay it forward process," Craig Bruska with the Native Plant Society of Texas said.

Bruska added that people are expected to bring seeds back from the plant they grow so the library can have an everlasting supply of seeds.

The way to borrow seeds is easy, all you need is a library card. You're allowed to take out five envelopes a month and only one envelope per species.

From there you take the seeds home, plant them during their designated season and wait for them to grow.

“The more people can plant the truly native plants the better," Sara Torres with the Native Plant Society of Texas said.

The seed packets are stored in what used to be the library's library card catalog. Now what used to help minds develop will help grow gardens.

“It’s all about teaching, sharing and promoting the use of native plants," Bruska said.
