Texas DPS closes Driver License Offices because of 'technical issue'; other state agencies also impacted

IT teams are currently working to resolve the issue, with no current timeframe for when things will be back to normal.

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Driver License Offices throughout the state are temporarily shut down Friday morning because of a "technical issue."

According to a social media post from DPS, IT teams are working to resolve the issue and customers have been informed of the problem.

At the moment, there is no timeframe for when the offices will open back up. Customers are told to check the DPS website and social media pages for any additional updates.

Meanwhile, the official X account for the Texas government said some other state agencies are also being impacted by the CrowdStrike issue, though the post did not elaborate on which offices are being affected.

"Some Texas.gov online services are also impacted and you may not be able to complete transactions at this time," the post said. "CrowdStrike is working on a fix and has stated that outages are not the result of a cybersecurity incident."

Texas.gov added that residents should monitor its communication channels for updates.

The latest on the CrowdStrike outage

Thursday night into Friday morning, a Microsoft outage impacted airports, banks, media outlets and a series of businesses and corporations across the globe.

The outage is reportedly related to software company CrowdStrike, which is headquartered in Austin.

At approximately 4 a.m. Friday, the technical issues impacted some travelers flying out of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Airlines – including Delta, American and United – were affected but have since returned to normal operations.

Additionally, Austin's public transportation system, CapMetro, also faced issues from the outage and some customers experienced delays as a result.

At roughly 6 a.m., CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz posted an update to social media regarding the error.

"This is not a security incident or cyberattack. The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed," the post said in part.

The post also stated that customers should utilize CrowdStrike's online portal for the latest updates.
