Texas gas prices keep falling. Here's where they're cheapest and most expensive

We broke down the latest average gas prices in the Lone Star State.

TEXAS, USA — Good news, Texas: You're paying the lowest average gas price in the nation and prices are declining, down another 14 cents since this day last week.

Bad news: You're still paying 80 cents more than the same day last year.

The statewide gas price average in Texas is $3.64 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. The national average a gallon of regular unleaded fuel is $4.13.

No other state had cheaper gas than Texas, but these were the closest five:

  • South Carolina: $3.66
  • Georgia: $3.69
  • Arkansas: $3.70
  • Tennessee: $3.70
  • Oklahoma: $3.71

These five states had the most expensive gas in the country:

  • California: $5.53
  • Hawaii: $5.42
  • Alaska: $5.05
  • Nevada: $5.04
  • Oregon: $5.00

“Texas has the lowest gas price average of any state in the country according Gasprices.AAA.com,” said AAA Texas spokesperson Daniel Armbruster. “It remains to be seen how far gasoline prices can actually fall with the busy summer driving season still underway.”

AAA Texas said several market forces continue to push pump prices lower. On Wednesday, crude oil prices reached their lowest point since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Crude prices are falling as the energy industry factors in a possible economic slowdown, AAA said in a release. Demand for gasoline also fell week-to-week and regional supplies increased, AAA said.

Within Texas, the five cheapest gas price averages were in Brownsville-Harlingen ($3.33), McAllen-Edinburg-Mission ($3.34), Laredo ($3.34), Corpus Christi ($3.40) and Sherman-Denison ($3.42). The five most expensive gas price averages in Texas were College Station-Bryan ($3.85), Midland ($3.81), Odessa ($3.73), Beaumont-Port Arthur ($3.72), Galveston-Texas City ($3.72).
