PHOENIX — A father and son were killed after they were hit by a Tesla while they were filling their truck with gas on the side of a West Valley freeway, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
AZDPS told 12News that the crash happened at about 6:35 p.m. on Friday on the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway near Elliot Road in Phoenix.
When officers got to the scene, they found two men who had been hit by a Tesla. The men were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by Phoenix firefighters. AZDPS said on Friday the two men were father and son.
On Saturday, 12News spoke with Delbert Tabaha who said the men that were killed were his brother, Calbert Tabaha, and his father, Albert Tabaha Sr.
Delbert said he was there when his brother and father were hit and said they were all on the side of the road filling up his vehicle that had run out of gas.
"I'm waving off vehicles and I talked to them, and (they) said, 'We're almost done,'" Tabaha recalled. "I saw that Tesla coming towards us. Before I could yell out, the car went by me [and] I fell back."
Tabaha described a graphic scene and said he, his father and his brother all had safety vests and lighting to help alert drivers.
"I could see [my brother's] intestines, his lungs, all that this part was split open," Tabaha described. "My dad, he was laying on his side, looked like he was sleeping... there was no pulse."
Tabaha said his brother, Calbert, loved sports and was the main provider for their family.
"He was always, always a Suns fan," Tabaha said. "When hockey was here, he was a Coyotes fan and he goes, 'I hate this, now I got to be Utah fan, because they moved.'"
Tabaha said his father, Albert Sr., was married for 53 years and always taught them to help others.
"He always taught us, when you see somebody in that needs help, don't wait to be asked, just get in there and do it," Tabaha said.
AZDPS said the driver of the Tesla, identified as a woman, stayed at the scene of the crash and was not impaired nor injured.
If you would like to help the Tabaha family, they have created a GoFundMe, which can be found by clicking here.
