SAN ANTONIO — Expect traffic delays through Boerne this weekend. The Texas Department of Transportation will shut down I-10 from SH 46 to US 87 through Monday morning.
The closure begins Friday, Feb. 11 at 8 p.m. until Monday, Feb. 14 around 5 a.m. Workers are tearing down the old Bandera Road bridge.
Both directions of I-10 will close in order to safely remove the bridge. Crews will need approximately 56 hours of continuous full lane closures, a TxDOT release says.
Boerne residents say they spent Friday preparing to hole up.
"The weekend, I think, is going to be really bad," resident Chilo Ramirez said. "I got some things at H-E-B, that way I'm prepared and don't have to come into town."
TxDOT says, off-duty officers will be onsite to assist with traffic control at the SH 46 intersection. Both westbound and eastbound lanes of I-10 will be reduced to one lane and then directed to a detour of the next available entrance ramp.
The bridge demolition is part of the I-10 Kendall Extension Project that includes frontage road and overpass improvements along I-10 from SH 46 to Fair Oaks Parkway in Kendall County.
"I'll be home for sure," Ramirez said.
