SAN ANTONIO — New lanes are now open to drivers commuting along Loop 1604 on the north side opened on Loop 1604 over the weekend, according to TxDOT.
Drivers will now have six lanes to travel on -– three both ways – between Stone Oak Parkway and Interstate 10 as part of the massive and ongoing Loop 1604 North Expansion Project in north Bexar County. Officials are hopeful this will bring more mobility and reduce congestion for San Antonio drivers; previously the corridor was four lanes across.
Once the project is all wrapped up, Loop 1604 on the north side will be 10 lanes across, providing five total lanes of travel in both directions.
Over the weekend TxDOT had announced major closures along Loop 1604 in North Bexar County. The closures were scheduled from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday but were opened early on Sunday around 6 p.m. Loop 1604 was closed from La Cantera Parkway to Stone Oak Parkway, including the Interstate 10 Interchange--an approximately eight-mile stretch.
TxDOT officials said the were closing the roads because crews were installing steel beams for the construction of flyover ramps.
