Man hit and killed by oncoming traffic while changing a tire on Highway 281, police say

Southbound lanes were shut down due to the crash.

SAN ANTONIO — One person has died after their vehicle was forced off a bridge during a crash and another person was injured during rainy conditions Thursday night, according to San Antonio Police. 

The incident occurred on the 4500 block of Highway 281 around 8 pm. Thursday.

Police say a Dodge Dart had a flat tire and another person driving a Ford truck with a trailer attached was parked behind helping. Both drivers got out of their vehicles and on foot. 

As a Toyota was traveling southbound on Highway 281 in the fourth lane they said another vehicle swerved into their lane causing the Toyota to veer right, according to officials. The driver of the Toyota struck the Ford who says the trailer attached was sticking put past the solid white line. This caused the Toyota driver to lose control and also strike the Dodge Dart that had a flat tire, police say. 

A chain reaction occurred leaving the the Dodge Dart to do a quarter rotation striking another vehicle reported as a Black Mazda, police say. The Dodge Dart was forced off the bridge killing Mauro Mendoza, 63, at the scene. A 52-year-old was also sent to the hospital in stable condition.

Parts of Highway 281 were shutdown Thursday night as the scene was cleared. 

The driver of the Toyota remained at the scene and cooperated with police. No criminal charges have been made at this time, according to police. 

Roads were slick due to rainy conditions at the time of the accident.
