SAN ANTONIO — If you're planning to visit Southtown this October, beware: You'll be seeing plenty of pumpkin-colored traffic barriers and cones limiting traffic through some key neighborhood corridors due to road construction.
The city says once construction begins on Oct. 2 at the two intersections – populated by popular bars and restaurants on one side, and the Hemisfair and La Villita districts on the other – it'll be weeks before they fully reopen.
The first closure affects both the north and south sides of South Alamo at Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard. Crews will work on the south side first, closing South Alamo off to most drivers between Cesar E. Chavez and Presa. You'll be asked to detour down St. Mary's (though you'll be allowed through South Alamo if you live nearby).
When work shifts to the intersection's north side, South Alamo will be closed from Cesar E. Chavez to Nueva Street; Hemisfair visitors would be better off parking off Cesar E. Chavez west of South Alamo, or in downtown proper. Otherwise, you'll be detouring down Nueva and St. Mary's.
Meanwhile, Cesar E. Chavez is expected to be closed off to westbound and eastbound traffic at Santa Rosa for even longer: until the end of November. Santa Rosa will remain accessible to northbound and southbound traffic. But those trying to get on the highway should give themselves a few extra minutes, as you'll have to detour down South Flores, Nueva and Santa Rosa.
Don't get too spooked about the Halloween-season road shutdowns: The city says pedestrians will still be able to use sidewalks during the closures, and promise that you'll still be able to get to your favorite Southtown businesses one way or another.
