SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio commuters hitting the road early for Thanksgiving travel this weekend will once again have to contend with backed-up traffic and lane closures in the area of Interstate 10 and Loop 1604.
The good news? The same closures won't await them when they return the weekend after Thanksgiving. Texas Department of Transportation officials say this will be the last weekend closure of 2024 at the interchange, where orange barrels and construction crews have become as common a sight as Six Flags Fiesta Texas coasters emerging in the distance.
Here are the closures to make note of as work continues on the multiyear Loop 1604 North Expansion Project.
From 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, to 5 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23
- Eastbound Loop 1604 closed at I-10 interchange.
- Westbound Loop 1604 front road closed at I-10 interchange.
- Eastbound Loop 1604 main lanes closed from Vance Jackson exit ramp to Lockhill Selma entrance ramp.
- Eastbound Loop 1604 main lanes double-right-lane closure from north of the Loop 1604 interchange to Camp Bullis.
- Eastbound I-10 front road closed north of Loop 1604.
- Eastbound I-10 exit ramp south of La Cantera Parkway closed (Exit 556B).
- Westbound I-10 closed to the eastbound Loop 1604 exit ramp.
- Westbound Loop 1604 closed to the westbound I-10 exit ramp.
- All four cloverleaf ramps closed.
From 5 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, to 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 25
- Eastbound Loop 1604 closed at I-10 interchange.
- Westbound Loop 1604 front rage closed at I-10 interchange.
- Loop 1604 will have a double-right-lane closure from Chase Hill to La Cantera Parkway
- Westbound Loop 1604 collector-distributor lane closed the Loop 1604 interchange.
- Westbound I-10 main lanes and collector-distributor lane closed at Loop 1604 interchange.
- Westbound I-10 main lanes will have a double-right-lane closure from north of the Loop 1604 interchange to Camp Bullis.
- Eastbound I-10 frontage road closed north of Loop 1604.
- Eastbound I-10 exit ramp closed south of La Cantera Parkway (Exit 556B).
- Westbound I-10 closed to eastbound Loop 1604 exit ramp.
- Westbound Loop 1604 closed to westbound I-10 exit ramp.
- Westbound Loop 1604 closed to eastbound I-10 cloverleaf ramp.
- Westbound I-10 closed to westbound Loop 1604 cloverleaf ramp.
- Eastbound Loop 1604 closed to westbound I-10 cloverleaf ramp.

TxDOT crews will be installing steel beams while continuing construction of flyover ramps at the interchange, hence the closures. As of Thursday, transportation officials say they're 80% done with steel beam work, and the first flyover ramp connected eastbound Loop 1604 to westbound I-10 is set to open to commuters by the end of 2024.
