Holiday relief in sight for San Antonio drivers using Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange

TxDOT says construction will take a break and all lanes will be open, giving drivers some much needed relief this holiday season.

SAN ANTONIO — For the past year, TxDOT has been working on the Loop 1604 Expansion Project which has been a traffic nightmare for drivers. Luckily, there is some temporary relief ahead for the end of the year.

As part of the Loop 1604 North Expansion, TxDOT has confirmed the schedule of construction closures for the holiday season related to steel beam installation at the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange for the remaining weekends in 2024.

"This will be the last major closure this weekend before the holidays," said Jennifer Serold, a TxDOT spokesperson.

This weekend, like much of October, one or more highways will be closed in both directions for an extended period of time.

"This weekend we're going to have I-10 closed in both directions at the 1604 interchange in northwest San Antonio. On Friday night only. Eastbound 1604 will also be closed. But that will be opened up by 5 a.m. on Saturday morning," Serold said..

Near the end of the month there will be minor closures with some ramps and lanes closed with the possibility for more extensive closures in the overnight hours of Friday, November 22 through Monday, November 25.

"We understand that the construction and the closures are challenging. They can be frustrating. And we remind everyone, please plan ahead this weekend," Serold said,.

Fortunately by Wednesday, November 27, the day before Thanksgiving, and through all of December there will be no closures and all lanes open.

"To provide relief for drivers and provide relief for businesses. We will pick back up work in January 2025," Serold added,

TxDOT also says in the coming weeks you'll have the first flyover ramp open and then we will open more flyover in 2025. Once these flyover ramps start opening, you're going to see a lot of congestion go away.
