19-year-old in critical condition after being shot on 281 near downtown, police say

The victim said he was driving southbound on Highway 281 when a suspect randomly pulled up next to him and started shooting, striking him below the waist.

SAN ANTONIO — A 19-year-old man was shot on US Highway 281 North Tuesday morning, according to police.

At about 8 a.m., San Antonio police say the shooting took place around the area of Josephine Street. Traffic was backed up all the way to Sunset Road for a few hours. Drivers were directed to exit on Josephine Street.

According to police, the victim was found inside his vehicle with an apparent gunshot wound below the waist.

The victim said he was driving southbound on Highway 281 when a suspect in a vehicle randomly pulled up next to him and started shooting, striking the victim. The suspect then fled in an unknown direction.

The victim exited at the Josephine Street exit and called the police. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The investigation is ongoing, but police do not think road rage played a part in the shooting.
