According to TxDOT data, the last time Texas went one day with zero deaths on roadways was 16 years ago Monday: Nov. 7, 2000.

Since then, more than 55,000 people have died on Texas roadways, or an average of 3,500 deaths each year. TxDOT said 482 people were killed by distracted driving in 2015, or one person approximately every 18 hours.

To try and end the trend, TxDOT has created the #EndTheStreakTX campaign to educate drivers and hopefully put a stop to the deaths.

TxDOT is also reminding drivers to do a few things to help end the trend:

  • Buckle your seatbelt – all passengers need to be buckled.
  • Never drink and drive – drunk driving kills; get a sober ride home.
  • Pay attention – put your phone away and avoid distractions.
  • Drive the speed limit – always follow speed limits and drive slower speeds when weather or conditions warrant.
