SAN ANTONIO — Get ready to turn on those heaters, San Antonio, because an Arctic blast is bringing the first freeze of the winter the season late tonight due to a strong cold front. This will be a big change for San Antonio after record warmth in December.
Two freeze warnings have also been issued for Bexar County early Sunday and Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
Overnight Saturday, here's what you need to know:
Timing: The front will arrive between Saturday at 10 p.m. through Sunday at 1 a.m.
Winds: Blustery northerly winds of 15-25 mph and gusts of 30-40 mph.
First freeze warning: In effect from 4 a.m. - 10 a.m. on Sunday when sub-freezing temperatures could fall as low as 29 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
Temperatures: Arctic air will plummet temperatures 20 degrees behind the front and near freezing early Sunday morning. High temperatures on Sunday will struggle to get out of the low 50s.
Wind chill temperatures: Since the front brings windy conditions it will feel more like temperatures are in the 20s Sunday morning and in the 30s Sunday afternoon. Winds will begin to die down Sunday night.
Rainfall is not expected with this front. However, frigid cold temperatures will hang around for another day.
Sunday night is the time to prepare your plants, pipes, pets because a widespread hard freeze is expected for San Antonio. Also remember to check on the elderly as temperatures drop overnight Sunday.
Overnight Sunday, here's what you need to know:
Second freeze warning: In effect for Bexar County from midnight on Sunday through 10 a.m. on Monday when temperatures could fall as low as 24 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
Temperatures: Lows are expected to fall in the 20s and teens for the Hill Country Monday morning. Sunny skies are expected in the afternoon with high temperatures staying in the 50s.
Southerly winds should return Tuesday, but San Antonians could still see some near-freezing temperatures again early Tuesday morning.
High temperatures will warm into the 60s by Wednesday.
