'Like a BOOM!' | Ceiling falls on woman's head as she slept during torrential downpour

It happened in Live Oak during Tuesday morning's floods.

LIVE OAK, Texas — A woman in a community northeast of San Antonio woke up Tuesday to parts of her ceiling falling on her head.

Now, she's left with this giant hole above her bedroom that's nearly as wide as the entire ceiling.

This happened during torrential rains in Live Oak.

Friends helped patch the ceiling, but her family fears more rains could make matters even worse.

KENS 5 met with the family Wednesday who gave us a closer look at the damage.

"It was terrible, the sound of it just falling down," said Audrey Yates. "Like a BOOM!"

It wasn't an alarm that jolted Audrey out of bed Tuesday morning. It was the sound of a ceiling collapse in her mother Lynda's bedroom in the middle of torrential downpour.

"It was just a terrible sound. I was like, 'Mama!' I thought she slammed the door and couldn't get out or something," said Audrey.

Luckily, Lynda wasn't hurt -- even after parts of the ceiling hit her on the head.

A hole in the roof can be seen above the large hole in Lynda's bedroom ceiling.

"Fiberglass, all that fell on my mother and she just had eye surgery," said Audrey.

The home off Lucky Oaks Drive has been in the family for 30 years. A few years ago, family members discovered a leak above Lynda's room.

"We started noticing drips. Little bitty, baby drips....just like the brown spots," Audrey explained. "We probably need a whole new roof, but we just don't have the means."

At least three to four inches of rain poured over Live Oak on Monday and Tuesday. With more showers possible these next few days, friends immediately helped patch up Lynda's ceiling.

"My mom's elderly. We're all elderly," Audrey said.

Lynda is 78. She's also battling Leukemia.

The family started a GoFundMe page in hopes of getting professionals to properly fix the home for a woman who supported her children as a single mother her whole life.

"It hurts because you want to take care of your mother as best you can," said Audrey, in tears. "If we didn't have the community that we have, I don't know what we would do."

The family is trying to get in touch with their home insurance representative to see what improvements can be made.
