Here's why the sky was hazy in San Antonio on Mother's Day

The agricultural burning usually continues through May before Mexico's growing season beginning in June.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio sky was hazy this Mother's Day due to the agricultural burning season in Mexico.

During the spring season as Texas experiences southerly winds the smoke from agricultural burning in Mexico can be transported across the gulf. This causes our skies in San Antonio to look "milky" and reduce our air quality.

San Antonio air quality conditions for Sunday and Monday are in the moderate category, according to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

The agricultural burning usually continues through May before Mexico's growing season beginning in June. Farmers usually use the fire to return nutrients to the soil and to clear the ground of unwanted plants.
