Local woman takes in sister after Hurricane Ida, parents still in coastal Louisiana

"The little towns have people too and they need just as much help," said Charity Johnson of Lockport, Louisiana. Her parents are still there, but safe.

SAN ANTONIO — A family is worried about their parents left behind in Lockport, Louisiana.

Tiffany Cleveland who lives in San Antonio took in her sister Charity Johnson and her family. They escaped the wrath of Hurricane Ida. However, the sisters’ mother and father Sullivan and Viola didn’t want to leave their small community. They stayed behind.

“You want everything to be well with them, and for them,” Cleveland. And everybody else in the community.”

Their parents’ home was damaged, but they are safe.

“Thank God,” Cleveland said. “He protected them. My mom, when we had communication, she said the door was blowing.”

The family shared photos of their town hit by the Category Four hurricane. They said small communities, like their hometown, are often overlooked.

“Everybody is important,” Johnson said. "Everybody matters. We are not degrading the major cities, but the little towns have people too and they need just as much help.”

Johnson is worried about what she'll return home to find. But overall, this family is grounded by their faith.

“God is going to sustain them through it all,” the sisters said. “Amen. Amen. And trouble don’t last always.”
