SAN ANTONIO — In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and now Milton, the Red Cross says volunteers are needed.
Today the Red Cross of Central and South Texas held a disaster relief class that is preparing more volunteers to go down and help in shelters.
The next class will be held on Saturday, October 12 while the rest of the classes will take place every Thursday and Saturday for the next four to five weeks.
"There’s a big need for sheltering right now and especially Florida right now after being hit by Milton," Mac McNell a volunteer with the disaster relief program said.
McNell added that around 83,000 people are in shelters where Helene and Milton hit in Florida.
“We need volunteers to work these shelters to help alleviate the suffering from the people that have been affected by all these hurricanes," McNell said.
Today McNell and a few others learned what it takes to assist those in need. He said everyone they serve comes from a different walk of life so it's important volunteers learn how to work with people.
In every class, volunteers also learn sheltering techniques and how to work with those who have disabilities.
“We have people that are on their way right now. We have people that have been there. Those who were not assigned to shelters are with the emergency response vehicles. They’re delivering food and water," he said.
While driving around to those who are in feet of water and mud, helping them clean up.
“Please come volunteer…we’re a big family we get along…we help people," McNell said.
