Rockport is ready for Beryl, with last-minute preps being completed

Even though the storm is now forecast to make landfall farther north, Rockport should not face the same kind of impact as Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

SAN ANTONIO — It was all about the final preparations in Rockport on Sunday. Many businesses were closing or already had closed in town. The most important, police say, the 24/7 ER of Rockport and Portland have closed.

Visitors, residents with medical and special needs, and residents in low-lying or flood-prone areas were under order to evacuate. Medical and emergency services may become limited or unavailable based on storm intensity.

Many in Rockport spent the day boarding up their windows and doors. Plenty of trucks with plywood were seen around town Saturday. Of course, people were filling up their cars with gas, and from what we could tell, there was no shortage of gas.

For the most part, people were taking the precautions they thought were necessary, whether they were staying in Rockport to ride out the storm, or skipping town.

Leanna Reininger is one of the residents who were planning to stay.

“We are just keeping a close eye on it. My husband is actually a pastor in town. So we have an entire church that is waiting to see what we are going to do. I’m actually in the process of getting food for the guys that are sandbagging the church because we are two blocks from the water," she said.

Patrick VanDohlen from San Antonio decided to cut their trip to the coast early.

“We are going back to San Antonio and we are ending our summer break a little bit early. The earlier the better is probably more prudent. We try to live virtuous lives and make good choices, so it may be better to head back sooner than later.”

People are urged to sign up for the CodeRED Emergency Notification System, which rapidly informs citizens about any emergency situation. To sign up, text ARANSAS to 99411.
